On Sunday, June 24th at approximately 2:00 p.m. a large-scale firestorm
broke out in South Lake Tahoe, California along the Angora Ridge. Sadly,
the conditions at the time fueled the fire into a highly intense and
destructive firestorm, which quickly destroyed hundreds of homes in just a
matter of 24 hours. By the time firefighting reinforcements raced into
town, approximately 250 homes were completely destroyed with many more
damaged and uninhabitable. Residents who ran from their homes, many with
only a few minutes notice left with literally the clothes on their back.
Bewildered and in shock, residents took shelter in Red Cross Evacuee
Centers and over the course of a few days began to grasp the magnitude of
the life-changing events of June 2007.
The tight-knit community of South Lake Tahoe quickly organized and stepped
up to help their friends, colleagues, neighbors and coworkers. It seems
everyone in town knew someone who lost everything. A loss of this
magnitude on the small town of South Lake Tahoe has hit hard though and
the need is great.
Loss estimates are more than 150 million dollars and most homeowners and
renters in the area are underinsured. Your help is needed for the
long-term recovery of the survivors.
The Angora Fire Fund is a non-profit agency with a diverse Board of
Directors established with a
mission to meet the
specific need whose primary residence was lost or damaged in the Angora
Fire. The Board of Directors will distribute all the funds collected to
those affected by the fire. An application for distribution will be posted
on the website soon and a list of donors will be available upon request at
any time (donors wishing to remain anonymous can do so at their request).
